People in recovery feel as though they are in for one reason and that is to stop something that they are addicted to. Recovery is painful, stressful, and causes a lot of anxiety and some people cannot cope with such intense and overwhelming feelings. They feel as though they need to medicate themselves with something to relieve the excruciating pain. They start by justification. They think to themselves that as long as they are not engaging in the alcohol or drug of choice that lead to treatment then they are safe from addiction.
