Valentine’s Day – Fall in love with you!

February 12, 2015 By Denise Leave a Comment

Love and Spirituality

With Valentine’s Day coming up I wanted to talk briefly about love and spirituality. This Saturday, February 14th can be really difficult for some people, especially those who are suffering from the loss of a loved one.

My challenge to you on Saturday is this; fall in love with yourself. If you have a significant other or people you can spend the day with, then great. But, you can still do this; love yourself.

You see this journey that you are embarking on, this journey towards wholeness and sobriety is a little easier to handle when you are spiritually connected. Your spirituality must be something you believe in. Whether it’s God, or something or someone else, you still need to love yourself.

I’m sure that most of you have heard of finding a higher power or God, especially those who are involved in 12-step programs. For many people, being able to connect to some form of spiritual existence can really protect or help reduce relapse or indulgence. For others, this may come across as the hardest part.

If you are struggling where you fit into all of this it’s okay. I’m here to tell you that it is normal and most people, including those who are not struggling with addiction, question their spirituality many times throughout their lives. The best place to start with this is to start falling in love with you.

This Valentine’s day, pamper yourself. Spend the day doing what makes you feel good. You deserve it!

Creating your own treatment plan – using balance

February 5, 2015 By Denise Leave a Comment

When I was a chemical dependency counselor for an outpatient program I would often ask my clients why this time was different. You see, most of my clients were there for the second, third, fourth, etc. time. While having these really difficult conversations I truly believed, for the most part, that my clients were genuinely committed to making it work. They were eager, ambitious, and motivated. To start with. The sad reality was that the door just kept revolving. Some clients dropped out, some went to jail, and others relapsed. For those who did complete the program, we would send them off with their resources and tools that they needed to keep their sobriety going. A few months later, some of those clients came back.

Only about 30% of those who attend a drug rehab facility will be able to maintain sobriety by using complete abstinence. Although there are many variables to consider including environmental, emotional, and psychological circumstances, it is important to know that the majority of people who have every intention of leading a sober life fail to do so even with the most expensive treatment options. You can read more about what goes in to the statistical outcomes here: http://www.naadac.org/assets/1959/whitewl2012_recoveryremission_from_substance_abuse_disorders.pdf

So what it is about the low success rate for in-patient and outpatient drug rehabilitation programs?

What are we asking people to do? We are asking people to quit their jobs, fork over a ton of cash, leave their families for 90 days, and then expect them to return back to their normal life, fully prepared to deal with the circumstances that they once left.

So, how can someone actually be successful when it comes to recovery and maintaining sobriety? They can create their own plan. Their own plan must consider every single barrier that may or may not happen and having a well thought out balanced plan is the key to success.

Is it Possible to Terminate your Recovery?

January 13, 2015 By Denise Leave a Comment

Yesterday we talked about the stages of change. The six stages of change are:

Pre-contemplation

Contemplation

Preparation

Action

Maintenance

Termination

When talking about addiction and drug abuse do you think it is possible for one to achieve termination? To achieve termination the user must be absolutely confident that they will never relapse, under any circumstance. This last stage involves some controversy. Some critics believe that a user can only ever make it to the maintenance stage and will have to always be aware of the risks, forever. Others believe that after long term sobriety, the risk of relapsing is completely gone.

Want to know what our opinion is?

We believe that every single individual is different. While most users follow the same pattern, not every user will follow the same timeline. Therefore, we do believe that for some people, the termination stage may be possible. The only person that can know for absolute certainty is the user and that often comes after years of deep self-reflection and determination.

Stages of Change

January 12, 2015 By Denise Leave a Comment

Happy Monday! This week’s topic is: Stages of Change

People who use drugs, alcohol, or struggle with any sort of addiction go through different stages. This is called stages of change. Where do you stand on this?

  1. Pre-contemplation – the stage where users do not even recognize that there is a problem.
  2. Contemplation – this is where the user starts to recognize that there may be a problem and is having thoughts about possibly making a change.
  3. Preparation –the stage where the user begins to prepare to change. Maybe they are thinking about setting a date  to quit.  https://www.liverehab.com/?p=1272
  4. Action –the user is actively participating in a program or has started to obtain sobriety. The user is on day one of sobriety or after.
  5. Maintenance –when sobriety has been achieved for some time and the user is working hard on maintaining their sobriety.
  6. Termination – when someone has obtained full sobriety and is confident that they can be in any situation at any time without the possibility of relapse.
