Addiction Radio EP. 002 - Fitness and Exercise

Fitness.

You either love being active or you absolutely loathe it. The thing is, I don’t think I’ve ever run into someone who was just kind of the middle of the road about being fit and active. With addiction and recovery however, fitness and activity levels can dramatically alter the trajectory of your success.

Fitness is so beneficial for people who aren’t in recovery or battling addiction too! We really had some fun recording this episode of addiction radio – we hope you  enjoy it as much as we did recording it.

Why Fitness is Important in Recovery

First off, I want to recognize that recovery is hard work and for many of you, just thinking about exercising or engaging in fitness may seem near impossible. And that’s okay. Let’s start this by talking about why fitness plays a crucial role in your ability to completely recover from your addiction and from there we’ll talk about how you can take the steps you need to take to get started.

Let’s dive into this months episode where we’re going to address this head-on!

Living With Intention and Addiction

June 7, 2018 By Nick Leave a Comment

Living with intention during recovery and sobriety can be incredibly powerful. Let me explain.

When you struggle with an addiction it’s important you take each day and live each moment with intention.

But what is living with intention all about? Glad you asked.

What is Intentional Living?

Intentional living is how you live your own life based on your values and beliefs. I’m not here to tell you how to live your life.

I am here to help you recognize some of your own deep rooted intentions.

It is about choosing to live in a way defined by your choices. Not your subconscious. Not just going through the motions. But, in order to live with intention, you need to set goals.

Living with Intention

The Importance of Goal Setting

Let’s talk about the importance of goal setting. We are all different people and we all have different ideas on how we can live our best possible life.

Think Big or Small

I want you to think of one goal big or small that you have for your life and write it down; anywhere, on a piece of paper or jot it down in your phone. I know that seems incredibly broad but think of something you’ve always wanted to do or maybe a way you’ve wanted to be.

Something that you can work on this week.

Example: “I want to be more kind.”

So for this, you will put that as your goal and every day this week, living intentionally, you would aim to be the kindest person you can possibly be. Be mindful of every interaction you make.

Example: “I want to have a better relationship with my mom.”

For this, maybe you would send your mom a text on Monday and call her on Wednesday. Or perhaps go see her on Friday.

Example: “I want to take a vacation to the beach.”

For this, maybe on Tuesday you would work out the cost of this trip and then on Friday you would work out how much money you would need to save in order to make this trip happen. You get the idea!

Setting goals doesn’t always have to be addiction and recovery related.

Oftentimes, those who are in recovery get stuck in the trap and believe that their entire life revolves around setting addiction goals: How many triggers can I overcome? Etc.

Don’t burn yourself out.

Think about the big picture and set a goal this week – make it fun!

Alcohol Addiction at Work – The Struggle is Real

June 2, 2018 By Nick Leave a Comment

The struggle is real.

Earlier this week I was reminded of what its like to deal with addiction at work. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve had to deal with it. But…

Something reminded of what it was like.

In a past life I had worked at a large call centre. You know the kind I’m talking about. Hundreds of people in grey lifeless cubicles. The monotonous drone of scummy sales tactics.

Proper boiler room style.

Anyway… I had a boss. And I hated every single time we had to meet. At the time I didn’t really comprehend that he had an alcohol problem. Looking back though…

It was obvious.

While the main tells were clearly evident like smelling of gin and red, puffy face, it was his behaviour that was less conspicuous.

Erratic. Unreliable. Forgetful. Angry.

You name it, he expressed it. I often wondered how he had even gotten the job in the first place, let alone managing a team of 20 people.

It was obvious he was dealing with something either consciously or subconsciously to do with alcohol. The craziest thing though?

It isn’t that uncommon.

Dealing with Addiction at Work

Being addicted to alcohol and having to go to work is no easy task. Even if you have a somewhat mild addiction you know what I’m talking about. How many times have you gone to work with a crazy hangover?

What starts out as a couple of drinks on a Friday night after work can quickly turn into a weekend affair that includes Sunday. Think about how you might connect with family members on a Sunday too. Lots of people have Sunday bbq events filled with family.

And, whenever there is family, there is alcohol.

Having a few drinks on a Sunday night isn’t necessarily a problem to begin with. But, when it turns into a raging hangover to start the week with? That’s a problem.

Look, work can be stressful, that much I know for sure. In fact, a recent study by Paychex revealed that the majority of workers are stressed on any given workday!

Alcohold Addiction at Work Due to Stress

Work Stress Triggers Alcohol Addiction

With the understanding that stress can be a major trigger for addiction it becomes so easy to see why people drink alcohol to try and escape. You certainly aren’t alone if you resonate with what I’ve written.

It can become really serious though especially if you find yourself coming in to work still drunk. You can put your own job at risk and, depending on the situation, the livelihood of others too. If you are working a job that requires you to be safe on the job, like construction, you need to be extremely careful too.

“What’s the big deal with coming in to work with a hangover anyway?” I hear some of you say.

Well, the big deal is that you’re withdrawing from the alcohol in your body.

When I think about my old boss and how much he must have been struggling every single day I know he could have benefitted from a program like Sobriety Success.

Isn’t it just normal though?

Society has normalised the ritual of drinking with mates at a pub after work. Or it can be viewed as a rite of passage to come in with a hang over all bleary eyed, head pounding. While society has normalised it, isn’t it time to move past this? Doesn’t feeling this way need to stop?

For many people though there is very little option for help. The traditional approaches to recovery and sobriety are deeply rooted in either a twelve-step program or expensive inpatient treatment. Can you really afford the time or money to do either though?

Sobriety Success is different.

Sobriety Success treats addiction and recovery using an approach that focuses on the whole body, mind and social aspects of live. You take courses and programs that are designed to be consumed from wherever and whenever you need.

This means you aren’t tackling the problem on your own.

We’re there to help you through the whole process. We provide resources, ebooks, monthly mastermind sessions and ongoing support to help you.

Because you can tackle your addiction on your own terms it means you don’t have to miss a single day of work, take time away from your friends or family and can do so without breaking the bank.

You can get started with the Sobriety Success program for just $1 for 7 days of full access. After 7 days you’ll pay only $37 a month.

That’s less than a round of drinks for a Friday night.

Welcome to the first (woohoo) ever episode of Addiction Radio by Live Rehab!

You’re probably asking yourself; why a podcast? Well, we thought it would be a good way to help busy people on the go get in some actionable advice to improve their lives. What started out as a conversation between Nick and Denise on healthy eating quickly turned into an opportunity that we thought the whole Live Rehab community would benefit from – so that’s where we thought we’d start!

Really excited to expand our message out via podcasts. For our first ever episode we decided to tackle a topic we get asked a lot about;

How do you eat healthy?

What we eat and put into our bodies plays a significant role in how we feel, regardless of anything else.

Most people who struggle with an addiction, don’t necessarily put a lot of thought and effort into what they are eating, because the addiction is what has taken precedence.

Everything you do revolves around what you are addicted to. Your nutrition has probably not been the best and has been lacking in some way.

Let’s dive into this months episode where we’re going to address this head-on!

The Surprising Impact of Alcohol

May 28, 2018 By Nick Leave a Comment

How familiar are you with the impact of alcohol both physically and mentally?

This infographic from the website Visual.ly highlights some important information:

From Visually.
The Impact of Alcohol

Let’s breakdown the impact of alcohol and see how this could affect you.

Blood Alcohol (BAC) Level 1

At a BAC between 0 and 0.03 you’re still feeling pretty normal. It would be hard to tell at this level you had drunk anything. There are some tests that can be done which can still figure out you’ve drunk alcohol.

Blood Alcohol (BAC) Level 2 – 0.03 to 0.06

Things start to get worse around this level. The impact of alcohol is definitely more visible and you’re going to be experiencing some mild euphoria, relaxation and in general being a more sociable person. Lots of people at this stage still aren’t thinking of themselves as heavy drinking even though they might do this level of drinking a couple of times a week.

It’s important to note there are many people who don’t realise the long term effect of alcohol even if they are only drinking this much. The problem is many people drinking this much multiple times a week. It adds up over time and the health issues compound.

We’re still only talking about 2-3 drinks right now.

How often are you drinking 2-3 drinks a week?

Blood Alcohol (BAC) Level 3 – 0.06 to 0.09

By the time you’re at this level thinks are taking a marked turn for the worst. Your alcohol consumption is somewhere between 3-6 drinks depending on a bunch of different factors. Both physically and emotionally you’re going to be impacted significantly. Think about things such as wildly varying emotion swings from anger to sadness and everything in between.

Physically speaking you will be dealing with much slower reflexes, reaction times and potentially staggering around. We all know what we look like at this stage (or friends/family members). It definitely isn’t pretty. Even if this doesn’t regularly describe you, it does describe potentially binge drinking episodes which can have even greater harm potential for instance.

Blood Alcohol (BAC) – 0.11 to 0.20

Here is where the dangers really start to escalate. Between 6-11 drinks can do the trick here depending on your weight, age and sex. Although, I would caution that these amounts should not be taken at face value. If you’ve ever blacked out or lost consciousness, chances are your BAC level was somewhere around this level.

If you do drink heavily and consistently experience things like memory loss, impaired sensations or a general stupor, the likelihood of developing liver disease is exponentially greater. Your immune system is also taking a major hit at this level. You might find that if you regularly drink alcohol to this level you are also getting cold, flu or infections much more frequently.

Blood Alcohol (BAC) – 0.21 to 0.29

The amounts of alcohol required to get to this level of blood alcohol will vary considerably between people so I’m not going to put a specific number of drinks. However, I will direct you the fact that death is very possible at this level. Major, massive physical effects are apparent at this level.

You’re very likely to become unconscious at this level at some point and you’ll be dealing with escalating issues surrounding your heart rate and breathing. The impact of alcohol at this level simply cannot be underestimated.

Your central nervous system is definitely under attack and likely to become severely depressed.

Blood Alcohol (BAC) – 0.30 +

A blood alcohol level of more than 0.3 is likely to produce death.

While other physical factors may be evident that preclude death, the ultimate destination at this escalating level is the only thing that matters. Even if you were to make it to this level of alcohol consumption, and the alcohol itself did not kill you, the withdrawal symptoms alone could result in your death too.

Alcohol and drug addiction treatment are often thought of as two different things. It is very easy to go out to a local shop in the United States and legally buy large amounts of alcohol. In fact, you can purchase enough to die from for under $20 in most states.

Can the same be said for cocaine or heroin?

No.

The danger then becomes that the concept of substance abuse in most people’s minds doesn’t extend to drinking alcohol. The modern media and society glorifies a drinking culture and stigmatizes other drugs. However, this chart alone, should be enough to highlight just how dangerous this kind of thinking is.

I assume that those of you reading this blog post might be able to identify at least a few times where these situations have happened to you. In fact, I also think quite a few of you might have even had drinking sessions where more than 10 drinks were consumed you passed out.

How close were you to dying that time?

You might never know. And, that’s one of the most dangerous aspects of alcohol addiction. Because of the relaxed approach to alcohol consumption around the world, it becomes easy to get caught in a cycle of alcohol abuse.

There is a way out.

When you think of alcohol addiction treatment, the first thing that probably pops into your mind if a treatment center. But, that doesn’t have to be the case.

At Live Rehab we realised that there was a need to help people get sober and quit alcohol from the comfort of their own homes without having to visit a treatment center.

Our Sobriety Success platform provides you with live video courses designed to take you through a complete recovery program. It doesn’t require an expensive, inpatient program. You won’t have to leave your friends at family for 30 days and you don’t have to visit countless support groups to get health.

And, you can get started for just $1.
