14 Essential Tips for a Healthy Life in Recovery โ€“ Tip #4 โ€“ Exercise

November 25, 2019 By Denise Leave a Comment

14 Essential Recovery Tips Series – #4 Exercise

Exercise is going to play a big role in how fast your body will return to normal. Many of us hate to exercise, especially right after a detox however, it is so important that you force yourself to do this daily.

Take is slow at first. It does not have to be vigorous, although that be preferable, it just has to be something that gets your blood pumping.

Think of a physical activity that you actually enjoy, or at least used to and start with that.

Some examples include running, walking outside, swimming, riding your bike, hiking, playing a sport, and yoga.

Commit to at least 20 minutes of physical activity per day and increase this time as it starts to get less painful. Motivation is the hardest part.

14 Essential Tips for a Healthy Life in Recovery โ€“ Tip #3 โ€“ Sleep

November 18, 2019 By Denise Leave a Comment

Are you sleeping right?

Are you prioritising sleep during your recovery from alcohol, opioids or other drugs?

Monitor your sleeping patterns to see how your body is reacting.

It is very important to get on a solid sleep schedule.

You should be sleeping 8-10 hours per night, no more, no less.

For example, one of the worst and de-motivating things that you can do in your sobriety is to stay awake all night and sleep all day.

If this is your sleep pattern, change it immediately.

To do this, force yourself to stay awake all day and do not sleep until after 8pm.

Then set your alarm for 8-10 hours later and start the cycle again.

It will be hard at first but after a few days (sometimes a bit longer) your body will adjust. If you have a hard time falling asleep at night try taking Melatonin and do not use the television as a crutch.

Make sure your room is dark, quiet, and free from sound.

You can try calm meditating music with headphones too. Limit the temptation to use a device such as a phone or tablet in bed.

The screens actively deplete melatonin which helps you fall asleep.

14 Essential Tips for a Healthy Life in Recovery โ€“ Tip #2 โ€“ Vitamins

November 13, 2019 By Denise Leave a Comment

Vitamins help tremendously in helping your brain achieve normalcy.

Although vitamins can get costly, it is important to prioritize. At the very minimum, fish oil, vitamin B, and a multivitamin will help.

Alcohol and drugs tend to deplete all the vitamins in your body so it is important to start to help your body now. Other recommended vitamins would be vitamin C and vitamin D supplements. Vitamin B can also help with energy levels so should be considered.

Recommended Vitamins

Multi Vitamins & Minerals Tablets
Choose a great multi vitamin that does a basic job at keeping the essential nutrients you need on a daily basis.

Natural Fish Oil Concentrate with Omega-3
The benefits of fish oil go on for miles but include increased energy and mood while regulating cholesterol.

Vitamin C (500 mg)
Vitamin C can help rebuild and improve your immune system along with strengthening your overall health.

14 Essential Tips for a Healthy Life in Recovery – Tip #1 – Nutrition and Healthy Eating

November 11, 2019 By Denise Leave a Comment

Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of healing the body and mind. Your body needs to be fueled with the proper nutrients on a daily basis. If you are used to eating fast food, processed, microwave, high fat meals, you will need to drastically change this part of your life.

To get the best results for your mind and body you will need to eat well balanced meals. First, begin with portion control. Eat often and do not gorge. You should be eating 3-5 medium to small meals per day. Each meal should consist of at least a serving of fruit, a serving of vegetables, and some protein and carbohydrates in at least two of the meals. Stay away from processed foods and limit your dairy and gluten intake. If you are working, try bringing your lunch to avoid going out.

Just don’t tell me to go to rehab

April 23, 2018 By Denise Leave a Comment

It makes my blood boil when people tell others that traditional rehab is the way to go.

Some people have no idea about non-traditional approaches to addiction and recovery.

I can’t really blame them though especially if they grew up in an era without the internet, apps and social media.

With today’s mobile technology and online access, we’re building a new way to source mental health support.

We have to allow people to get the help they need.

On their own terms

Terms that weren’t possible or available when we were younger.

Let people approach their sobriety and addiction or recovery program wherever they want. However, they want.

Not every addict needs to go a traditional treatment facility and drop $30k for group sessions that don’t support them in the real-world when shit hits the fan.

Not every addict should go to a weekly session and get a sponsor who might be just as fucked up as they are.

We’re in a world today full of 24/7 mental health support powered by technology.

I can’t tell an addict what route to take for recovery.

I don’t even know what route is best for the individual person because each person is individual and has their own needs.

All I can do is provide support and access to learning material and proven strategies for beating addiction – whether online or offline.

Your path for recovery is not the same as anyone elses.

Your path should be defined by you.
